Multiplexing is a method in communication technology to provide a transmission path (signal line) for several transmitters for optimal use.

In electronics, a multiplexer (also called a mux or data selector) is a circuit that selects a signal among several analog or digital input signals and passes this selected input signal to a single output line.
Conversely, a demultiplexer (or demux) is a circuit that has a single input and passes the input signal to the corresponding output line as indicated by the associated multiplexer.
A multiplexer is often used with a complementary demultiplexer on the receive side.

Vemos cómo funciona un selector de datos de 1-Mux o de 2 bits a 1 bit. Éste sólo tiene una entrada de control para dos entradas de datos. Según DIN 40900, el símbolo del circuito consta de un bloque de control y un bloque de función. La estructura de las puertas lógicas se puede derivar de la tabla de conmutación:
